How much does it cost to advertise in The Best Times?

This is probably the most-asked question we receive from prospective advertisers. We want to emphasize that it’s not a cost, it’s an investment. The cost to place a display ad varies in relation to frequency, ad size, and color.

If I buy advertising, will you accept my press releases or articles for publication?

There is no connection between advertising and editorial content. However, the editorial staff always welcomes information of interest to our readers from advertisers and non-advertisers. We depend on many sources of information in preparing articles for the paper.

How should my ad be submitted?

Our rates are based on receipt of electronic files. You may e-mail us your completed ad as a high resolution ‘pdf’ or ‘jpg’ file. You may also provide the file on a CD.

Can you help me design an ad?

Ad design assistance is available at $50 per hour, at a minimum of one hour. One review/change is provided at no extra charge; additional revisions will be billed at $50 per hour.

When do you need my ad?

Our deadline for reserving space is the third day of the month preceding publication. The deadline for final proof approval or submission of electronic files is the eighth day of the month preceding publication.

How do I pay for my advertisement?

Prepayment of the first ad insertion is due the third day of the month preceding publication unless other arrangements are made. Subsequent insertions will be invoiced and due on the last day of the month of publication. The Best Times accepts MasterCard and VISA.

What happens if I sign a 12-time agreement and then have to withdraw my ad?

We would need to have a written document canceling the agreement before the third day of the month. If cancelled, the cost would be adjusted accordingly. For example, if you had a 12-time agreement for a quarter page color ad at a rate of $540 per ad, and you cancelled after three insertions, you would be invoiced for the difference between the three-time and 12 time rates, in this case, an additional $70 per ad.

May I change my ad?

Yes. You may change your ad each month. We must receive notification of a pending ad change by the fifth of the month. We would need to have final proof approved by the eighth day of the month. If we have not received final approval by the eighth day, the same ad will be run as ran the previous month.

Am I restricted in what I can advertise in The Best Times?

Yes. All advertising shall comply with the “Johnson County Government Advertising Policy and Guidelines.” Examples of advertisements prohibited by county policy:

alcoholic beverages and retail establishments that sell alcoholic beverages as
their primary commodity;
tobacco products; issues, candidates, and campaigns of a social or political nature;
language or descriptive material unsuitable for a family publication;
promotion of gambling, pari-mutuel betting, or games of chance;
firearm sales;
insurance;
credit cards; and some aspects of travel.

May I put a flier in The Best Times?

Yes. The cost is $35 per thousand, or $1,750 for 50,000 fliers.

Advertiser-supplied pieces for inserting must be submitted for approval. Once approved, the advertiser must have all 50,000 pieces delivered to The Best Times’ printer by the eighth day of the month preceding publication.

BUSINESS CARD ADVERTISING

"At Your Service" is a new option for advertisers who don't find Display Ads and Classified Ads to be quite the right fit. The "At Your Service" page features the business cards of small and home-based providers of goods and services.

Make sure you're on the page, where colorful business cards will catch the eye of the 50,000-plus Johnson County senior adults who receive The Best Times in the mail each month. The price is great and the exposure unbeatable.

The cost of an At Your Service business card ad is an affordable $200 per month.

We've made it easy on you by eliminating the need for a contract. Have your card added to the At Your Service page for one month at a time or prepay for multiple months.

CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING

Classified Advertising is $25 for 20 or fewer words and $.50 per word thereafter. Classifieds must be submitted online or by mail or fax (no phone orders accepted), with payment, by the eighth of each month for publication the following month.
