What community-based services are available through the Johnson County Area Agency on Aging?

The agency provides services to support the health and independence of older Johnson County residents. These include:

Information and assistance
Caregiver support
Catch-A-Ride
• Legal Services
• Insurance Counseling
Neighborhood Meals

Many of the services are funded by the Older Americans Act or by state and county funds. Donations from those who use the services are accepted.

What information and assistance is available to me?

A wide range of information and assistance is provided through the AAA information line.

What kinds of health programs are offered?

The following health-related programs are available:

• Flexercise-- a stretching, strengthening and flexibility program offered at some Senior Neighborhood centers.
• Health promotion
• Nutrition counseling
• Limited assistance for physical adaptations to dwelling

Are there programs to support caregivers of older adults?

What types of legal services are available?

Legal assistance is available for civil cases only, such as:

• Housing
• Social Security
• Medicare/Medicaid
• Power of attorney
• Living wills
• Consumer advocacy

The Elder Law Hotline also makes volunteer attorneys available at (888) 353-5337, a toll free number. Appointments can be scheduled at multiple locations throughout Johnson County. Kansas Legal Services can be reached by calling (913) 621-0200. To be eligible for legal services, a client must live in Johnson County and be 60 years of age or older.

Do you provide information on health insurance?

SHICK (Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansans) is a program offering older Kansans an opportunity to talk with trained community volunteers about Medicare and other health insurance programs. The program also provides assistance with accessing prescription drugs at reduced costs. Information is available at (913) 715-8856 or toll free at (800) 860-5260.
