from the Johnson County Library

A bibliography of caregiver information, books, and some caregiver websites you don't want to miss - compiled by Melody Kinnamon consumer health librarian at the Johnson County Library.   She can pull together information for a client or family educating them about a specific condition or disease, locate area clinics, agencies that serve the uninsured or underinsured; or provide a bibliography of resources related to your need for health information. Melody can be reached at 913-495-7587.

Telephone reference services are available at 913-495-9100, Monday through Saturday, where a librarian is available to answer most questions someone might call with.

Johnson County Human Services & Aging has an Area Agency on Aging link that provides Caregiver Support resources.  One highlight of this website is the information on local assistance such as the Meals on Wheels program.  (You are on this website right now.)

The Johnson County Health Department has an Adult Care Program to assist the public with general considerations in making a nursing home choice.  They also can inform the public regarding the complaint process.   Click on Adult Care Program for contact information.

The Kansas Department on Aging (KDOA) is the state's focal point for aging services and information.  This website links together all the state’s programs as well as legislative information of interest to seniors and caregivers.

The Department of Health and Human Services website provides a wealth of information for caregivers including information on hospitals and nursing homes and government agencies providing services for the elderly.  It also provides reliable, informative links to various health conditions affecting the elderly.   Click on the Aging link for caregiver information.

This Web site is operated by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), a national medical organizations representing more than 93,700 family physicians, family practice residents and medical students.   It provides coping tips for caregivers and links to other organizations providing support for caregivers.  Available in Spanish. Just click on the letter “C” under the “Conditions A to Z” and scroll down to “Caregiver Stress.”

The National Family Caregivers Association educates, supports, empowers and speaks up for the more than 50 million Americans who care for loved ones with a chronic illness or disability or the frailties of old age. If someone is going to look on the internet for information about a health condition, this is a very good site to utilize.  The links to sites from this site have been reviewed and checked out to make sure they are reliable.
